| Detailed topographic map, printed on two sides, is based on USGS topographic quadrangles. On one side is the south end of the park at large scale (more detailed) showing Mt. Katahdin itself and the more readily accessible areas. The mapmaker has enhanced some of the key symbols on the USGS base maps to make them more visible, such as the roads, trails, campgrounds, etc. The Appalachian Trail is given a special tint. The trails are each rated into four different classes of difficulty, explained in a "Hiking Tips" box, which also lists recommended equipment, temperature, trail blazes, and park seasons. |
